SW OH | Trucks with automatic transmissions usually have rear end ratios in the 5.XX:1 range. Auto shift manuals often have ratios in the low 3.XX:1 to upper 2.XX:1 range. Older manual shift manual transmissions were always around 370:1-4.11:1. I think the high ratio rear ends in auto shift trucks is all about higher MPG.
Here's something to think about, the driveshaft in a truck with a 2.70:1 ratio will turn at half the speed of the driveshaft in a truck with a 5.40:1 ratio. Now why did the ag industry come up with 1,000 RPM PTOs?
