southern MN | 40 years ago when computers were new Atari had the novel idea of making smart disk drives that could look on disks for special markings to see if it was genuine or pirated software. Since this was hardware it wasn’t going to be able to be defeated.
It made their disk drives more expensive, but it was widely heralded as the future and making software cheaper because sales volume would go up, pirated software would go down.
Couple months later custom chips were floating around for $20 that reprogrammed those disk drives to copy most any disk, including other computer brands, the anti piracy marks and all.
Ended up those drives made software piracy much much easier, for an extra $20.....
