Subject: Shimming double disc openers

Hey guys.putting new openers on our planters,3.5mm blades from shoup.we are trying to get them shimmed for proper contact area using the business card trick.since they are the thicker blades we are shooting for about 1.5 inches of contact area.we have heard of bearing problems if shimmed to tight.the card trick works but there is a lot of variables.thickness of cards, cards square toward one another(same pitch)or not, cards slightly pointed away from one another(each card coming off the round of blade square)we can check same blade a few different times & get a few different measurements.are we over thinking this.want to make sure we have them right.any other way to do this?I was thinking maybe a micrometer or something like that.what say you guys?thanks for all advice.
