Subject: NW_Bearcat... Clover Seed follow up

NEMO
Just saw your question on clover seed and treatment from a previous post.

We have never used treated red clover seed on purpose. (One time all the supplier had left to finish up with was treated). Raw red clover seed works just fine in a frost seeding.

Grandpa said clover seed germination gets better with age. He use to prefer clover seed that was at least a year old, if not older. I think any seed that doesn't grow the first year is likely to grow later on.

Had a great uncle walk a 40 acre field to seed clover by hand. Pretty common practice back in the day. He could grow the clover! Remember trying to plow some of his clover under and constantly tripping the plow. Talk about fun!

If spreading with fertilizer cart need to double spread. Still might not get full coverage depending on width. 4 wheeler with a seeder and 15 foot swath about ideal.

We used to frost seed clover in wheat about this time of year. Cut the wheat and then hay the clover in August. Following year would hay it in June and if it was a dry year let it go to seed and combine the clover for seed in late August/early September.
