Subject: Tarping Hay

Top middle of MO. land of green hills and grass
I must be doing something wrong. Trying to keep hay in good shape to manage waste. Baled dry, and string tied. I’m stacking in a 3 bale pyramid, then tarping. Tried this year to lay some tire sidewalls down below the bales. I generally bale and stack prior to hay getting rained on. Tarp comes to within 1-1.5’ of ground, but there would be an area of the bake that could get some water blown onto it.

Pulled the tarp back today, and top row of bales are black, and damp at least 3-4” in. Looks like I’d have been better off leaving out.

What am I doing wrong in this program, or should I quit trying and do as everyone else around is and row them up?
