Subject: Alfalfa seeding this week (pics)

north-central Indiana west of Fulton
Planted a new alfalfa field Monday afternoon. We have mostly no-tilled alfalfa for the last 26 years with the Tye drill. Chaff deposited behind the combine after wheat has always been at least some concern, as germination can be affected in that strip. Have also lightly disked with a crow foot packer behind, soon after taking straw off..... then spray with RU and plant into stale seedbed later. All work, but also wanted to smooth field better as well. We had purchased a used Caseih 330 VT /disk a year or so ago, and this gave us a chance to try it and see how it works.
We hit the field lightly on an angle after taking off straw. Got good rains to germinate wheat seed. Sprayed RU a week before planting, then lightly went over it with the 330 again ahead of seeder.
Not used to the dust while planting, but had good moisture below. Got 4 tenths of rain Thursday night and could easily row the alfalfa yesterday. Another half inch came last night, but there is plenty of mulch left on field to avoid washing, which seemed to occur when we used to plow before planting years ago.
