Subject: Tip for those installing Tru-Count with Insight

Pittsburg, Kansas

To tell the Insight the planter is down in planting position we used two of the JD unit mounted paralell linkage switches wired parallel. These are normally closed (NC) switches so that when the planter is down the circuit is closed and the Insight knows the planter is in planting position so is turned on. If one planter unit drops in a ditch and depresses a switch, since they are wired parallel, the other will still tell that the planter is down.

The problem we run into is that on our 1790 20" and our Bauer Bar 20" planter where the transport wheels are quite a ways in front of the row units. When we go over a terrace straight across it all of the units can be raised enough where the parallel planter unit linkages will depress both switches at once and the Insight will shut off the Tru-count clutches for a few feet while traveling over the terrace. As long as we are going over the terrace at an angle, having two switches on different units wired in parallel, took care of the problem. The problem only occurs when going over the terrace straight.

On a regular 1790 30" planter or any planter where the transport lift wheels are between the rows I do not think this would be a problem. Only where the transport wheels are a few feet in front of the row units does the toolbar get lifted enough to cause problems when going over the terraces.

We are going to change the system over to a normally open whisker switch that engages (closes the circuit) when the planter main frame wheels are lowered into planting position. We will adjust the switch so it makes contact about when the row unit disks touch the ground. Since the transport wheels stay down all the time when planting, even if we go over a terrace straight and the row units almost or actually do lift out of the ground, the switch will stay engaged and keep the Insight informed that the planter is down so the Tru-counts will keep spitting seed out.

Just thought I would pass this info along so anyone installing Tru-counts on a planter that has the transport wheels in front of the toolbar and has terraces could avoid this problem. I think you will not want to use the planter unit mounted switches but rather use a switch that gets its signal from the main frame.

Circuit closed=planting. Circuit open=not planting. Easy to get that confused when talking about normal open (NO) and normal closed (NC) switches. Have to make sure and use the right one for the application.
