Subject: Storing dry fertilizer

Callao, Missouri
I would like to start applying my own dry fertilizer this fall. I have very little experience handling things like Ammonium Nitrate, DAP, Potash, Urea, ect. We thought that we could haul grain to the river terminals, backhaul fertilizer, unload onto plastic on the ground, cover with plastic, and scoop into spreader when we needed it. I talked with a fertilizer rep today who insisted that Ammonium Nitrate will not "keep" if we picked it up in the next couple of weeks, and spread it in a month or two. He said that you need to stay very current, or the fertilizer will attract so much moisture that it will cake to the point of being tough to spread. Is this the case? How do fertilizer dealers deal with this? I've always just seen wooden bunks inside the building that they scoop from. I have a hard time believing that a truck load of Ammonium Nitrate in 60 days will be hard to spread.

Thanks

Scott
