Subject: Raising my own beef?

I know this is a real general question with a lot of specific variables, but does it make financial sense to raise my own beef? Friend of mine would be willing to go halves on it. I'm thinking in the $1.30-$1.50 a pound range to buy a 4-500 lb feeder calf. The hay is basically free between pasture and some waterway's that I bale. Not sure what processing would cost, figure a hundred or so for the vet. Big unkown is feed. I have a local mill that'd probably do small batches of finisher ration for me and I'd be at their mercy for price/ration etc. How much of a corn/something ration does it take along with full feed grass to get a 400 lb calf to 1,000-1,200? Steaks are nice, but I'm really after roasts and hamburger (have had zero luck grilling a good steak). Just thinking even with hamb at $3 in the store, the cost per lb of a single beef might not be worth it.
