Subject: a couple of technology thoughts

I started a different thread because they were already buried below. Contrary to what was stated below I think Dows opposition to Acremax is purely for financial reasons. Why? Pioneer, or seed gremplasm with the trait originated through them, will be the only company granted the reduced refuged concept in a bag if approved and Dow will not have any opportunity to benefit from the sale of Herculex traits through this. With SmartStax they will get a royalty fee from any bag sold. From a purely finacial standpoint it would be stupid for Dow not to do everything possible to block AcreMax and push SmartStax, including badmouthing there own trait for financial gain. Also Pioneer did practically nothing but pay Mycogen, before they were purchased by Dow and were in desperate need of money, $50 million or so for the right to all future Herculex traits. For Pioneer to take half the credit for this trait is ridiculous. They did however have the marketing to bring the trait to market and make it popular so with out them Herculex might never have made it. Dow and Syngenta are in tough situation, they have some good traits but Monsanto controlls most of the commerically available germplasm small companies work with. Monsanto has been effective at limiting new traits by leveraging seed companies to use VT3 traits in at least, say 70%, of their seed offerings if they want the best crosses available. You can do your own thing but be prepared to only be able to buy older hybrids or ones that don't yield well from any Monsanto owned genetics source. It comes down to money, how can more be made and how can others be prevented from making it. All the companies are the same.
