I was told once, to be profitable in cow/calf you must be debt free in 2 of 3 things.

1. Own cows debt free
2. Own winter feed debt free
3. Own summer grass debt free.

I would add having corn stalks to graze substantially reduces winter fees costs. I hope to have cows on stalks for 120 days during winter, only feeding supplemental feed for protein and when snow cover prevents grazing.

Another thing I’ll add is don’t go overboard on overhead expenses. You can feed a lot of animals with a pair of 4430’s and a $10k wagon in turned tires. Or even one 4430 and haybuster if your all dry hay.

Good answer but the part about owning....opportunity costs should be figured in. That would nullify owning being a factor. ?

Edit to add question marks. Meaning yes? No?
