Subject: Army Story - Reunion with Basic Training Fellows

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463
Since this is Armistice Day or more important 100 years since the armistice that ended the First World War, I decided to tell an Army story.

My basic training was at Fort Lost in the Woods in the State of Misery,
fall of 1963. And I remember three Kansas farm boys very well.

In September I decided to do a Cafe post asking about them.

https://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=805611&mid=698...

From the RE info I made phone calls. One answer from the wife of one of the fellows. All three alive and farming in the Smith Center or Athol Kansas area.
Found out they were not three brothers, but two brothers and a cousin.

And I told Mrs Feldmann I may be knocking on a Feldmann door sometime in the not to distant future.
It would be a nice trip, see harvest in another part of the world. Why not go maybe mid October.

Then the Bi-Rotor combine sale, just a few miles to the east.
That sealed the deal, Kansas here I come.
Found a motel in Red Cloud Nebraska, etc.

Drove there Oct 27, first to the motel, then to the auction site.
Then decided to go to Athol and ask about Feldmanns.

I get to Athol, no C-store, no bar, no business other than a Co-op.
And the Co-op looks closed, weekend and very wet in the area.
But I see some folks working on a combine. Mounting tracks.

See one fellow that looks about 75 years old.
So I ask, “Are you Carl Feldmann?”

“No, but I am his cousin”
We talk, then he agrees to ride in my car to one of the brothers home in town.

Fellow sitting on the porch is David Feldmann. Introduce myself, basic training fall of 63, etc, etc, etc.
We both remembered the names of the drill sergeants, other things.
David has a D-21 and some two cylinder John Deere tractors sitting in the lot next to his house.
Tells me Carl also has a D-21.

Carl and Robert like to go to a lot of auctions, pretty sure they will be at the Bi-Rotor auction Monday.
At the auction I did not see any real good candidates, so decided to just start asking, maybe anyone over 70 years old.
Say these two fellows, asked, “Either one of you guys Carl Feldmann?”
“I am”
Talked to both Carl and Robert.

The three Feldmanns had joined the Kansas National Guard. Went to six months training, then six years of reserve, five summer camps.

I stayed in the Iowa National Guard, did 22 or 23 summer camps. Am still in some kind of reserve, will be as long as I am alive.
That means I get Tri-Care.

Top picture is David Feldmann. Second picture Carl on the left, Robert middle, don’t know the fellow with the big hat.
Rest of pictures are David’s tractors.
