Ecosystem research, historical or otherwise, has its benefits. Understanding how the rock under our feet has formed and changed is critical for geology work, which in turn is important for the mining and drilling industries.
The same can be said for the agricultural research performed by your state university. Farmers are only 2% of the US population, consider the amount of money spent every year from the research labs, all the way to your county extension office.
A decent amount of University research is bankrolled by private industry because they need the data, but aren’t capable of doing it themselves. So tax payers don’t always footing the bill.
