In Iowa, you get one free pass. Hubs used it last year. They will not forget, you will be called next session (quarter in Iowa). There is an online form on the Iowa Courts page that lets you explain your conflict and I've never heard of someone being denied their one-time pass. Of course, this is Iowa, but perhaps your state has a similar option.
