Subject: RE: Installing new hydrant

NW Illinois Stephenson county
After digging up a hydrant 3 times with plastic fittings on the bottom, I put brass fittings on instead. I think frost heaved it enough to break the plastic fittings. Wrapping the galvanized vertical pipe with electricians tape to above ground saves it from rusting. I have one hydrant my Dad put in over 60 years ago and still works fine with no problems. Another one he put in 40 years ago had a leak when I used it. When I dug it up the vertical pipe was fine except where a small rock had burrowed a hole in it. These are both Iowa hydrants. Good Luck on your installation.
