We also used to put a short piece if iron pipe like you said, but ran into the same problem. We just put a short piece of clearcore black plastic pipe between the pvc and the hydrant with brass fittings. Tamp the hydrant in and it seems just as solid. The clearcore allows some give so the pvc doesn't break if the hydrant gets bumped hard.
