Amherst WI | I don't disagree with you at all on the easy part and there was plenty of false statements and things I didn't agree with in the book but I do think one of the main issues with the current setup is the famer is too far removed from the consumer.
Every hand between the producer and the takes their cut and that's why nothing is left on the farm by the time that dollar gets here.
If there was more connection to the farmer maybe their would be less people who don't get farming working against the industry too.
I planted .2 acres of sweet corn next to the house. We sell some and give some to the neighbors/landlords. We made more off that .2 acres than I would have grossed off an entre acre of the commercial sweet corn we grow if we can get a contract. Clearly a lot more labor but it still goes to show where the money is in farming and it isn't being the last guy in line with the hand out. | |
