SE ND | We use a stalk shredder when the stalks are dry, we leave them standing until then. If you chop them and let them lay and they get rained on you will never get them dry again. You will know if they're too wet, the stalks smell like silage when you start shredding. Dont run the rake in the dirt, leave some of heavy stalk residue, the husks and light stalks make better feed/bedding then the heavy coarse stalk. We chop the stalk as low to the ground as we can with an Alloway Stalk Shredder, about a 1" stub, makes baling much easier on the rake teeth, baler pickup and tires. | |
