That's strange. Sounds like they knew something you didnt. I've had blue green algae in ponds before and cattle won't drink if it's nearby. They'll go to the opposite end of the pond.
Funny you cleaned your tank. I cleaned a tank yesterday. Cattle were still drinking from it but thought it needed done. Getting pretty nasty.
