I certainly hope the trade/tariff stuff is short lived hocus pocus. Even if this is resolved in a timely manner I fear there are long term repercussions to this whole thing. The Chinese are already subsidizing their own people to grow more soybeans and they will continue to do so. That is kind of small potatoes but the real kicker is the continued heavy investment by the Chinese in Brazilian infrastructure. China has the where with all to encourage expansion of acreage in Brazil and build the roads, railroads, and ports to get the crop exported in a timely manner. This process began years ago and I expect will get ramped up significantly if China feels we are an unreliable or uncooperative source of soybeans. Same goes for corn. I look for them to encourage expansion of South American corn acres to fuel their ethanol plants that are under construction or in the planning stages. This is a big deal and I don't understand why more people haven't been talking about it.
