I'm not sure why grain fill would be shorter, there's no grain to fill yet, corn doesn't mature on sunlight as beans do. Why wouldn't the grain fill be the same amount of days whether its pollinated on July 1st vs July 10th? Now I could see making a case that days to flower being cut short may have an impact as the plant wouldn't have as much time in the vegetative stage to establish the maximum yield potential. Kind of like turning long season{late flowering} corn into short season{early flowering} corn by flowering early.
