sw ontario | Our peer support group was a bunch of us pork producers had a buyers group since 1980 and met 2x a month , you learned lots of others faced same stress/issues you have/had---then after our meetings we went for beer and pizza--also did bus trips,bbq's,Christmas parties---saved a ton of cash ,made great friends and had support you could call on.......unfortunately last 10 yrs. or so as the guys got older and there kids came in the kids think they don't need the group and can do better on there own....now only buy seed & chemicals as a group...originally had pretty much every farm input,including insurance,health plans,all feeds,fuel ,vaccines,ect.....like Jeff ,even though we farm in a highly competitive area if someone got hurt,sick,died everyone would pitch in too help .......lot's of stress in everyones life but sometimes its us that put it on ourselves...In Ontario they had something this winter called "let's Talk" which opened farmers up too speaking about mental health issues with no stigma attached---there is no shame in getting help,its the smart thing | |
