Cave or not it really doesn't make a difference. Trump is doing what he said he was going to do. Long before he ran for election he stated how he didn't like the trade deals. He sees all trade as a zero sum game, one winner and one loser. So even if a deal is done with China in the short run, long term we are just going to lurch from one trade dispute to the next.

Trade is NOT a zero sum game. Trade make us stronger and the world a safer place.....Don't think Japan or Germany are going to attack us. The USSR fell apart when they opened up and allowed people to travel and started to trade with the west. We are party to a number of trade agreements that set standards for products specification and rules between the parties this drive efficiencies and helps adjudicate disputes. For example TPP had mechanisms that all counties had agreed to that would have protected Intellectual property rights. The very complaint we have with China. Now we are on our own. We are basically giving all of Asia to China.

So in closing a question: Why would Trump be worried about farmers, it's not like the vast majority of farmers are going to vote the "R's" out of office.
