As nice and cool as it was last year to finish, it was also fairly dry in most areas. So i would argue more normal temps last year along with more normal precip would have yielded the same results.
For this year my opinion of above trend prospects at this time is based on better than normal planting conditions for most. Also it in the last 2 weeks many areas have received good soaking rains, putting them in good shape for a while as far as moisture.
Edit to add i wonder how the fringe areas are doing? They could be the kicker as I believe about all of the fringe had record corn last year. So i suppose even if the heart of the corn belt is as good or a little better than last year, we could end up at trend or slightly below depending on the fringe.
