Southern Ontario | Yes you do whatever you can to spare these animals.
As a reflex, I take the same protective measures myself.
It seems this attitude is near universal with farmers that I speak with.
Even back in 1758, famous Scottish poet and sometimes farmer, Robert Burns (Auld Lang Syne), wrote a poem on his sadness from unintentionally plowing up a mouse's winter home.
He discribes much of what you folks were mentioning even though the mouse may eat a few kernals of his grain.
Apparently, some things do not change with farmers over the centuries.
