Towards the end, mainly last half of grain fill, you should have a decent idea where your crop is going to probably end up. When you chat with the seed company agronomists, the difference from an average sized kernel vs large ends up being roughly 20 bu better yield on average.

Last year, for instance, was an interesting one. People still complain about getting hoodwinked. Which is odd because at least for the most part, it appears the cool to downright cold late summer and early autumn is what helped the crop across the Midwest. Who could have predicted that in early July?

For the most part, on this forum it’s word of keyboard, so you can’t make too much of an intelligent decision based on it. Very few of us were providing the data and pictures during the growing season to really show what was going on.

Edit to add: As I’ve stated multiple times on this site, you don’t end up with 4-6’ corn in areas with ears pictured without an amazing finish to the crop. That means you can show poor crop conditions through the growing season and still have a good yield, especially if you don’t go out and do some scouting....
