After doing some thinking, I would like to say to be very careful.  No offence meant to anyone involved in the oil and gas industry that may be reading this, but there is a reason JR Ewing was a believable character.  There are certain real estate agents and used car salesman you may trust and certain ones you do not.  Oilmen are no different.  This well may have a value of tens of thousands of dollars, could be $1 like you offered, or even a huge liability with no value, but a large cost for plugging and cleanup.  You will need to find an OH oilman you can trust that is willing to give you an honest opinion and assessment.  An attorney that specializes in oil might also be an option.

We had a poor oil well, lots of gas, some brine, lots wax---company offered it to us for free if we took over liability--we declined
