| Look, obviously no one is forcing you do plant cover crops. Apparently you are skeptical and want some kind of guarantee. Nothing the matter with that, but that's not likely to happen. Use your best judgement and make your own choices. I value being able to do that for myself.
As far as covers, you grow your own wheat. That can make a pretty good cover crop, especially ahead of beans with the possible advantages of better soil tilth, improved nutrient recycling, less erosion and some weed control.
I've used wheat drilled at 30#/acre or cereal rye at 20#/acre with good results.
There are other economical seed choices for cover. Just the improved erosion control is enough to make up my mind. I'm not going to act surprised when the next excessive erosive spring rain happens when soils are very vulnerable. I've already taken some pro-active measures to reduce the predictable aftermath.
