If my cow is #16 her calf is 16.. if I keep that calf back as a heifer I change the tag.. I add the last number of the year born..if the calf was born in 2014 so it would now be 164.. and so on right or wrong that's how I do it.. I think that is the easiest for me and I can track alot of my herd that way still have paper records but hardly ever use them.
