New silo's work good for farms that know they will be milking cows for quite a while. But not all old silos are in good enough shape to store silage, sometimes they need to be relined, sometimes they're not strong enough to put silage in them, and then there's the cost of unloaders. Most livestock guys already have some type of loader or skidloader for unloading silage bags. If they decide to get out of livestock and stop making silage then the cost to switch to cash grain is minimal if using silage bags, can be substantial if a big investment was made into a silo and unloader that have little use for anything else. Unloaders can be sold/moved, but the silo and the cost of the cement foundation is usually gone, although some guys use them for grain storage. Check around and see if there is anyone that rents baggers, that is what I'd try first. Then you'll figure out if it works for your operation.
