NW Iowa | We chop about 10-12 acres for cows/calves at our farm. We make a drive over pile, sides formed with bales (I know, not exactly the best way). We form the sides with bales due to space constraints. Once we are done chopping/packing, the bales are pulled away, sides cleaned up, and covered with plastic. Sides are held down with dirt, top gets a lot of tires. This is all on a dirt base, high enough that we don't have water running into the pile. Works well for us in this situation.
Now, at my place with my small herd there, I am considering bagging a few acres worth this fall. I can't use enough/day to keep the face fresh on a pile (pile would need to be ~20' wide to pack it). Time will tell what I end up doing there though.
Really, it doesn't take too long to do it. This past year we used our old 2 row pull type to chop as our custom guy (who runs an old 5400 with 4 row head) was down. We run old Roorda wagons, which can be had all day at auctions for $1000 it seems anymore... | |
