In my limited experience too much down pressure is better than not enough. Load pins by precision planting only last for a season and then they are worn out it seems. You can actually get instantaneous down force with springs, which is why they were used in the first place. You can actually get quite creative and make multiple stage down force spring setups. Running a hydraulic downforce setup will cost you more money than what it's worth at todays prices. My 2 cents.
