the problem with gassing them with vehicle exhaust is that it builds too slow and rats can pretty well figure out what's going on, and will just move out, unless you can block their routes of escape.

years ago we used phostox pellets with some success, but it's definitely off label.

like garvo mentioned, nh3 is quick, easy, and they won't return for quit awhile, if ever.
