As mentioned earlier, a chest type is best for meats. Most chest types are manual defrost whereas most uprights are automatic defrost. Auto defrosts work by removing humidity from the air. That causes "freezer burn".

Placing a freezer in an unheated garage is hard on them in the winter. An appliance repairman friend once explained it to me. The oil in the compressor can get stiff enough in the cold the compressor won't function properly.
