Subject: What is this a symptom of?

Clark SD

These two pictures show the ears pulled from 17ft 4 in of a thirty inch row. There are 3 ears missing that i used for sampling. The ears are not in the order that i picked them. My question is, is it variable plant spacing, or uneven emergece, or a little of both that caused this?
