Subject: RE: southern beef plants

North Alabama
We use to finish cattle but trucking from down here wasn't cost effective with the closing of packing plants. Now we just background cattle we buy from local sale barns and put a group together, but with this years drought and the market being the way it is we haven't bought any calves. We don't have any grass because all the pastures are burnt up. Planted close to 800 acres of wheat and oats and we have had just a tenth of an inch of rain since the first of September. Needless to say we don't have any winter grazing. Not saying you couldn't grass finish cattle down here but you couldn't this year.
