South Texas

Cotton John,
  I don't get a do-over, but here's what I'd do if I did get one:
I'd find a good SS specialist in the area.  No idea what they call themselves, but probably I'd begin with a lawyer who specializes in SS matters.  Then I'd get the most thorough, invasive physical examination I could afford.  Get that info to the lawyer and let them apply for everything to which you may conceivably be entitled.  Presume that the initial claim will be turned down and it doesn't matter--have them file an appeal as a matter of course.  This is not the time to be stoic, ignoring all the little or large things that might turn out to be actual physical problems.  This is the time to document every ailment in your history.  The expert can also answer your specific question you asked tailored to your exact situation, not "generally."  You aren't "generally."  You are specific.
My thought is that SS is a huge game with the bureaucrats on the side opposite you, always ready to pleasantly say no.  The government is NOT your friend and has zero interest in your needs.  You need somebody on your side. Going into it solo is like deciding to fly yourself from NY to LA in a rented plane with no training--you might get lucky.
But maybe that's just me.  Best of luck in whatever you decide.  Stetts
