With all this talk of cover cropping I got a question. After wheat harvest they are talking about planting a cover crop whatever it is going to be. Then let's say the volunteer wheat sprouts. Now you have volunteer wheat that is 6 inches tall and it is time to start planting wheat say the 1st of oct. What are the concerns of mosaic in the volunteer and how do you control it. Thanks
Are you asking about seeding the field with the cover crop to wheat again in the fall? If so, this isn't a problem because you start killing the cover crop out about 4 wks before you intend to seed wheat in that field. A couple of herbicide applications are needed to keep it clean during those 4 wks.
If you are asking about adjacent fields, then the best trick is to use a very aggressive cover crop such as pearl millet that will shade out the volunteer wheat. Works great. You can help it further by applying atrazine to the pearl millet cover crop. |
