It won't take you long to figure it out. Just a little trial and error. I wish I had a nickel for every watermelon I had ever clipped. As the other poster stated the bottom or belly color is a good indicator. Also, I found that on the striped melons if the stripe is breaking pretty good that can be an indicator.
