Seek out older farmers (late fifties) that you are certain they have no one to take over the operation. There are always some around that have no children, or their children have left the farm for other careers. Be open and polite and ask if and when they want to slow down or retire you would be interested in taking on some or all of their operation.

You have to be careful not to step on some neighbours toes. Make it clear that if he or she has some other young farmer in mind that you would respect that.

The ideal situation is to find a farmer that wants to downsize and is willing to give up some of his land. This allows you to slowly take on more land. Sometime downsizing includes giving up some rented ground, so you get the first foot in the door.
