South Georgia | Get one that looks like a refrigerator, not like a space ship. Freezer on top, no ice or water dispenser in the door, no buttons, none of that. A basic refrigerator is a pretty simple thing, and as long as it is ELECTRIC, and not ELECTRONIC, most of the stuff that will go wrong is pretty straightforward.
When I bought this house, it has a fancy stainless LG fridge that everybody ooh'd and aah'd over. About a year after I moved in, the compressor went out. I couldn't even find a repair guy who would touch an LG in the first place. I bought a replacement fridge then diagnosed the old one myself. Just the compressor cost half what my replacement fridge cost, and although I don't know the age of the LG, it was still a current model.
The replacement is a little louder, probably not as energy efficient (on paper at least), makes more ice, and cost a third of what the old one cost. And it looks and works like refrigerators have worked for the last 40 years.
