Ok I'll come clean just trying to lighten up the crowd. There is no silver bullet.
However there are steps we can take to make our soils and crops better.
How can a guy in Georgia become a world record holder? He has a open mind, he was not satisfied with county average yield. None of the products he endorses will stand on its own nor are they better than the products he does not endorse. It is a systems approach. Each product from seed, soil, equipment, to fertilizer, nature. All play a role in his accomplishments.

Back to residue management. Do some research on soil life not earth worms but the micro scopic life. Look at their role in soil and plant study the microbial food chain.
Plants capture sunlight that is then turned into microbe food and released into the soil.
The bacteria and fungi consume this food. Bacteria feed on protein and starch, fungi on carbohydrates. They covert these in powerful nutrient solublizing and chelating compounds. Fungi release acids and bacteria release alkali.
With this in mind you approach the problem at hand. Because Bacteria goes dormant in cold temps they are not as effective in the fall. You need to feed the fungi protein and starch. Fish is a good source of
protein. Also keep the soil pH on the acidic side 6.3-6.7.
Like I said before it is a total system not a single product or practice.
