SE IL and SW IN | We checked some strips a few years ago for NPK in the fall and again at corn planting. We had a good stand of ARG and radishes and/or rape. The spring test for P&K were lower than the fall tests, but not low enough to matter. In our low OM soil without manure, we can drive the N, both NH3 and nitrate test to < 5ppm, and often as low as 1ppm. That tells me that we need to put some N in a 2X2 or something similar in our system. Our planters are set to apply 40-45#N now and I am not sure that is enough when we get late with sidedress. We are still working on the early N requirements of corn, but we have been short in a big cover situation more times than my bank account likes.
All that to say put plenty of N on for the early use by the corn plant. | |
