NEKS | We have experienced real yield loss I believe due to nutrient tie up. Plant some acres to rye following corn, then plant to beans the next spring, and repeat. First bean crop this way (on limited acres) yields were 8-15 bushels behind beans with no cover crops on strips weighed side by side. The next year we ran 10-34-0 with the planter where there was rye. Yields were slightly behind that year. Moisture should not have been a limiting factor the first year. Second year there did seem to be more moisture stress in the beans behind rye than beans with no rye.
On our poor sand the rye has to help yields long term. On our better ground, I am not sure.
