I didn't read it that way.  What I read is that his family did it that way, and he has been doing it that way....  i.e.  he doesn't know another way to operate.  "This is how we've always done it".  That's what I read/heard.

Interesting, I really didn't pick up on the "till the bank takes it all away comment".  When I read it in your post, it came across that maybe he is not as profitable as people might think?   And again, we might just be reading too much into that comment - more than was intended anyway.
