East Central South Dakota | Hey Chad, you are right about the vastness and openness with the lack of population in counties west of HYW 281. These are the counties that are swimming in grain (proposed Onida ethanol project), huge farms, very few villages, with towns bigger than 3000 almost non-existent, rural water and power requirements met----you would think permitting would be a no-brainer, right-----------in actuality the counties west of 281 are some of the hardest to get permitted in because of the mind set of the people going west (really not much permitting at all). As you go West the people are independent and not really looking for much change.
The two easiest counties to get permitted in are Minnehaha (the most populous county in the state) and Brookings county. Both on the I-29 corridor and neither has that many farmers on the zoning board. I hate to generalize, but we have found the more farmers on the zoning board the harder to get permitted------fear of competition wins out over the new market for their grain. | |
