| I was raised since I was 3 by an elderly aunt & uncle who farmed but had no children of their own. He was in his 70s and was terminaly ill with prostrate cancer. I was turned down by the local draft board for an ag exemption because they had not adopted me. My lottery # was 92, they took up to # 260 that year IIRC. I had already had my draft physical and was waiting to be called up when I was able to get into the Army Reserves. I was in the Reserves less than 4 months when my uncle passed away. I was issued a "hardship discharge" before I was sent to basic training.
