Franklinton, LA | There are numerous stories about deferments during WWII. My father's younger brother got a medical deferment due to heart damage from a childhood case of Rheumatic fever. When WWII started he had a wife, a young child, a college degree in education plus an interest and aptitude for electronics. He spent WWII as a civilian electronics instructor for the Army at Sioux Falls, SD. The winters in Sioux Falls were drastically different from South MS. The quickly erected housing was a little chilly on winter nights. After WWII he taught electronics at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. When he applied for a promotion, the veterans who had served on active duty got military preference points. He did not get the preference points because he had not served on active duty. | |
