Corn silage mixed with ground alfalfa or ground grass will fatten them up some, I'd call it giving them a winter windbreaker.

#3 pounds a day might be possible in texas, not here in cold winters.

Edit: depends on how old they are, starved out young cows will respond better than ones that are old enough to vote.
