Texas/New Mexico Stateline
Wouldn't it be safe to say that anything that causes stress at grain fill can cause the tip back or pull back? Lack of moisture, nutrients, too much heat, etc? And it will be different causes depending on the field.

We call them aborted grains in wheat. We often see the top of the wheat head not fill because it turns off hot and dry in May. Disappointing when you rub a head and get 5 good grains. Just part of dealing with the weather.

Milo usually won't abort grains except in extreme stress, but will cannibalize the stalk to fill the grain. Causing severe lodging. But will usually fill the grain even a small amount.
